Alex Matz of the USA won Leg 3 of 7 in Longines FEI Jumping World Cup™ competition for the North American League on Saturday. The 28-year-old athlete partnered with Dutch Warmblood Ikigai to post the only double clear of the night at Toronto’s venerable Royal Agricultural Winter Fair.
Tiffany Foster made the sold out Canadian home crowd at the black tie event proud, finishing second aboard Electrique, a 10-year-old Zangersheide horse. Third place went to American McLain Ward and Ilex, another KWPN horse, who most recently won a Team silver medal together at the Paris Olympic Games.
It was course designer Oscar Soberon’s first time creating a track at the Toronto World Cup, and he got his wish that at least a few pairs made it through to the jump off. “There’s definitely a lot of room for quick, tight turns and some long gallops,” he said of the shortened Round 2 course.
With combos riding the jump off in the order they finished the first round, it was two Canadians who bookended the tiebreaker.
Up first, Mario Deslauriers — who won the World Cup Final at Gothenburg in 1984 — had a rail down for 4 points with Costa Quick PS, crossing the Longines beam in 39.59 seconds.
American Lillie Keenan and Argan de Beliard topped their time, clocking in at 35.43, although they too picked up 4 for a fence on the ground.
Next, Alex Matz moved into the lead with a foot perfect round on Ikigai, putting a competitive time of 34.68 on the leaderboard.
Neither Ward nor Foster could top Matz’s score, each seeing fences down, with Ward fishing in 34.58 seconds and Foster in a blistering 32.81. It was particularly heartbreaking for Foster, who was giving fans a beautiful ride but knocked down the top rail at the Longines finish.
“He is incredible,” said Matz of Ikigai. “We always knew he had so much talent.”
After thanking the owners, his family, and his team, Matz added: “He tried his heart out. He did everything and more we asked of him.”
Winning at Toronto will certainly be a lifetime memory for the young American, who capped a spectacular week with his World Cup win. “I never thought that I’d have the week that I’ve had, but I’m grateful for it.”
Behind Keenan in fourth and Deslauriers in fifth, American Kristen Vanderveen (third at the Washington leg this season) and Bull Run’s Jireh finished sixth as the fastest of the 4-faulters. She was chased by Daniel Bluman of Israel (Gemma W), Rene Dittmer of Germany (Corsica X), Abdel Saïd of Belgium (Arpege du Ru), and Aaron Vale of the USA (Gray’s Inn) in the top 10.
Saturday’s performance boosted Bluman to the top of the league standings overall, in the race to collect qualifying points for the Longines FEI Jumping World Cup™ Final at Basel (SUI) next spring. Vanderveen and her compatriot Kent Farrington hold the second and third spots, with Matz having moved into sixth.
The excitement travels next to Arcadia, California on November 23, where a brand new venue at the historic Santa Anita racecourse will challenge human and equine athletes.
