Taj: All Football Matches Will Be Covered by VAR
Subtitle: The federation chief said AI expansion and full VAR coverage are priorities for Iranian football.
Mehdi Taj, president of the Iran Football Federation, announced during the “Football Technology Day” ceremony that the federation is moving to expand artificial intelligence in football and ensure full coverage of matches with Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology.
AI as a new direction
According to the federation’s official website, Taj opened the event by thanking referees, members of the executive board, veterans, and the media, and also congratulated journalists on Journalist’s Day.
He referred to the unveiling of a comprehensive AI system and its link to the refereeing department, saying the technology should be developed across all areas of football.
Artificial intelligence is a special phenomenon, and in football, just like in other social fields, we are addressing it.
Taj stressed that using modern technologies, especially in refereeing, is not a temporary choice and said Iranian football must plan for wider adoption.
Full VAR coverage
Taj also pointed to the challenge of equipping stadiums, saying the federation has continued to advance VAR deployment despite infrastructure limitations.
All matches will be covered by VAR.
He explained that at times, because it was not possible to equip all stadiums at once, the federation had to move equipment between provinces.
In Taj’s view, broader VAR use — if supported by stable equipment, trained personnel, and standard communication infrastructure — could be one of the most important steps toward improving the quality of football matches in Iran.
Reliance on domestic expertise
Taj also emphasized the role of domestic specialists in designing and implementing the unveiled systems, saying the project was built on local capabilities.
The construction of equipment, the development of AI, and the technical systems were carried out with the cooperation of Iranian experts.
The unveiling of the comprehensive AI system alongside the plan for full VAR coverage shows that the federation is seeking to increase the role of technology in football’s executive and refereeing structure.
Conclusion
Still, the success of this path will depend on transparency, continuous evaluation, and sustained investment in referee and technical training.
